Everything you wanted to know about Board & Quill. If your question isn't here, send it to hello@boardandquill.com - genuinely, if you're asking it, someone else probably is too.
Getting Started
Board & Quill is a gameschooling curriculum subscription for homeschooling families. We write structured, multi-tier lesson plans built around board games - so the learning happens at the family table, woven into real game play. Not worksheets dressed up as fun. Genuine education that happens to also be a really good time.
Amanda and Sean - two homeschooling parents from Alberta who got tired of the gap between "educational" and "worth playing." Board & Quill is our fix for that.
Yes - our lessons are built around specific games, so you'll need the game itself to play. Most of our featured titles are widely available online and at local toy and hobby stores. If you're not sure where to start, we're happy to point you in the right direction.
We are - Board & Quill Inc. is an Alberta corporation and all our pricing is in Canadian dollars. That said, gameschooling families are everywhere, and our curriculum travels. If you're joining us from the UK, Germany, or anywhere else in the world where people take their board games seriously, you are very welcome at this table.
The Lessons
Each month is built around one board game, and every game comes with three core subject lessons. Each lesson has a hook to pull everyone in together, tier-specific reading and activities, and then you all come back to the table for game play. The learning and the game are genuinely connected - not bolted on to each other.
Absolutely! Each lesson comes in three tiers - Little Learners (ages 5-7), Middle Tier (ages 8-12), and Upper Tier (ages 13+). All three tiers start together, split for their own content, and come back together for the game. One game, one session, everyone at the table.
Nope. Every lesson is written as a standalone - no assumed knowledge from previous Board & Quill sessions. Jump in wherever the game takes you.
It varies by game - we pick subjects that actually connect to the game, rather than forcing the same subjects onto every title. Faith & Character is the one constant across every game. The rest is chosen to fit.
It's a short family discussion lesson that connects the game to a character or faith theme. It's fully optional - when you sign up, you'll get an email asking whether you'd like to receive it. No pressure either way, and no judgment regardless of where your family is coming from.
Subscriptions
Two tiers - Base ($15 CAD/month or $150/year) and Premium ($29 CAD/month or $290/year). Base gets you three core subject lessons built around one game each month, for one age tier. Premium adds all three age tiers, a personal archive that grows the longer you stay, Learning Records for each game, a monthly letter from Sean and Amanda, and voting rights in The Quarter Quill. Annual billing gets you two months free. If you'd rather not commit to a subscription at all, we also offer Mini-Packs - single-game curriculum packs you buy once.
Yes! Both Base and Premium are available monthly or annually - annual gets you two months free ($150/year for Base, $290/year for Premium). Annual is great if you already know it's a fit - just be sure before you commit, since it's a one-year commitment. Monthly is a no-pressure way to test the waters first.
Premium subscribers build a personal archive of every month's lessons - it grows as long as you're subscribed. If you cancel, you lose access. If you stay, it keeps building from the month you joined. It's one of our favourite things about the Premium experience.
Every quarter, we put four upcoming games to a vote. Premium subscribers each get one vote, and the winning game is guaranteed a slot that quarter alongside the two games Sean and Amanda choose. You get to have a real say!
Yes. No contracts, no drama. Just note that Premium subscribers lose archive access on cancellation - so if you've been building up lessons for a while, it's worth thinking about before you go.
Absolutely - upgrade or downgrade anytime. Just keep in mind that the archive is a Premium feature, so downgrading to Base means losing access to it.
No refunds, on any of our digital products. Once we send a lesson, it's yours to keep - and we can't pull it back. If something's gone wrong with your subscription or a delivery, email us at hello@boardandquill.com and we'll do our best to make it right.
Yes - Learning Records come included with every Premium subscription, and one is included with every Mini-Pack. They track each kid's progress through the curriculum across all four mastery levels - introduced, practiced, applied, mastered - so you have a portfolio-ready record of what your kid actually learned from each game. Base subscribers don't get Learning Records - if you want LRs as part of your curriculum, Premium is the way.
Mini-Packs
A Mini-Pack is a one-off curriculum pack built around a single game - no subscription required. You get all three age tiers, lighter and shorter lessons that are perfect as an add-on after an already full day, and a Learning Record included for every purchaser. Subscription-free Board & Quill, game by game.
Mini-Packs are lighter, shorter, and built for flexibility - you buy a single game's curriculum once and own it forever. Premium subscribers get all three age tiers every month plus a personal archive that grows the longer you stay. Mini-Packs are a great way to try Board & Quill without committing, or to add a game you love to your existing curriculum.
$17 CAD each. The first Mini-Pack is Dutch Blitz, with more games to follow.
What's Coming
Captain Flip is confirmed as our next game - you can see it on the shelf at boardandquill.com. We'll be adding curriculum for it after launch. Beyond that, we're not announcing games until they're locked in - but Premium subscribers get to vote on upcoming titles through The Quarter Quill, so you'll have a say in what comes next.
That's us! Well, us and you!! Boardaquillians are all the people now sitting at our ever growing Board & Quill family table! Sean gets all the credit for the name!
We'd love to hear it - reach us at hello@boardandquill.com. Genuinely, if you're asking it, someone else probably is too, and it might end up on this page.
